Fighting Truth Decay.

The News Literate Community Initiative brings together community organizations and engaged residents to share tips, tools, and techniques that help people tell fact from fiction in every kind of news. Together, we’re fighting truth decay.

Our Mission & Vision

Our mission is to fight truth decay by bringing a wide variety of resources to the community that help people tell fact from fiction and become more savvy consumers of all kinds of news.

We envision a community where well-informed citizens move forward together, pursuing common purposes using a shared set of facts. A community strengthened by understanding, grounded in truth, and empowered to meet challenges collaboratively.

The News Literate Community Initiative is a collaborative, community-based program that equips adults with the skills and tools needed to distinguish fact from fiction in today’s fast-moving information environment. We partner with local organizations, volunteers, and educators to fight truth decay and strengthen informed civic engagement. We are fiscally sponsored by AHA Projects, a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit, so donations are considered tax-deductible.

With information coming from thousands of sources—some credible, some misleading—news literacy has become a core civic skill. Being news literate helps people make informed decisions, understand public issues, and engage in meaningful dialogue grounded in shared facts.

“The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (i.e., the reality of experience) and the distinction between the true and the false (i.e., the standards of thought) no longer exist.”

Hannah Arendt, noted historian, philosopher, and political theorist, 1906-1975

The lack of news literacy skills and the decline of trust in media are well-documented. Click here to learn what the research says.

Our programs are designed for all adults, regardless of background or experience. Whether you’re a parent, business owner, volunteer, student, or community leader, we welcome your participation.

No. The News Literate Community Initiative is strictly nonpartisan. Our goal is to promote critical thinking, shared understanding, and informed civic dialogue—regardless of political viewpoint.

The Challenge

“Eight-in-ten U.S. adults say that when it comes to important issues facing the country, Republican and Democratic voters not only disagree on plans and policies, but also cannot agree on basic facts.” – Pew Research Center, July 2025

In today’s fast-paced news environment, misinformation spreads easily, making it difficult to separate fact from fiction. Many adults struggle to agree on basic facts, which can weaken dialogue and democratic decision-making. News literacy provides the tools to evaluate information critically, recognize credible sources, and engage thoughtfully, helping communities stay informed, resilient, and connected.

The News Literate Community Initiative is proud to use resources developed by the News Literacy Project (NLP), a nationally recognized leader in news literacy education. Through this collaboration, we bring NLP’s proven resources, expert guidance, and evidence-based materials to our local community.

The NLP resources strengthen our ability to provide high-quality, nonpartisan tools and training, ensuring that our programs reflect the best practices in news literacy education and strengthen our efforts to fight truth decay.
